Important Backpack Components

By Antigone Arthur

The first backpack was nothing more than a satchel tied to a stick. While handy, this device was not the most ergonomically efficient. Fortunately today backpack manufacturers have created a wealth of ergonomic and helpful style modifications to help backpacks fit more comfortably.

Most backpacks today consist of several components. The basics include:

  • Straps - most straps and harnesses are balanced and well padded so you can easily carry heavier weights. Straps today allow a full range of motion and are adjustable to accommodate longer and shorter lengths. Some packs even come with a sternum strap to reduce irritation and chafing.
  • Hip belt - the hipbelt is an important component of most back packs. The hip belt helps stabilize and distribute your weight evenly. It also helps prevent the pack from bouncing up and down or out of place. The belt is useful for all packs, large and small.
  • Back pad - the back pad helps prevent discomfort and injury from objects striking the back. Most packs, whether industrial or basic have some sort of pad in the back. A day pack or school backpack may have only a rigid and slightly padded panel built into the back of the bag. A campers or Alpine backpack however, may have a more durable back pad and harness attached.

Today backpacks are rapidly gaining popularity. Sports backpacks have become popular as back packing is adopted by fitness enthusiasts the world over. Today there is a backpack to suit almost every need and activity. Here is a sampling of some of the many packs available today:

  • Soccer back packs
  • Ski packs
  • Baby backpacks
  • Hiking/Camping back packs
  • Laptop backpacks/computer backpacks, notebook backpack
  • Skateboard backpacks
  • Waterproof backpacks
  • Rolling backpacks
  • Leather backpacks
  • Weatherproof packs

The key benefit of all these styles? Each is ergonomically designed to provide maximum comfort and durability. You can even buy a picnic backpack with features to help reduce strain and discomfort while carrying!

Extending the Life of Your Pack

Whether backpacking through Europe or using a laptop backpack to carry your work home with you, there are certain steps you should take to extend the life of your satchel. Nothing is worse than buying a quality bag only to have it wear out on you in a short year. Most packs can last 10 years or more if you care for them properly.

Here are some tips for extending the life of your pack:

  • Store your pack in a cool, dry location.
  • Always air dry rather than mechanically dry your pack.
  • Wash your pack by hand if necessary.
  • Avoid leaving your pack in the sunlight for extended periods of time.
  • Use zip lock bags to protect the interior of your bag from spills of shampoo, lotion or other portables.

The better you care for your pack, the better your backpack will treat you for years to come. If you have time, keep an eye out for discount backpacking accessories. Usually you can find one or two products to help extend the life and usability of your pack. Add on pockets are one example of a useful add on that increases your storage space.

Back Pack Features

When buying a back pack there are several features to look for. The features you look for will depend in part on the activities you plan to use your pack for. For example, if you plan on using your pack for frequent camping adventures you probably want a top loading pack. Here are some additional features to consider:

  • Durable material. Look for packs made of weather resistant materials. These will last longer than ordinary canvas bags.
  • Find a pack with sturdy zippers.
  • Consider a pack with proper padding and cushioning. This is especially important if you plan to travel
  • Find a pack with aluminum stays. These help support your back and increase comfort.

Ultimately the pack you choose will depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Remember have fun while shopping. Chances are you'll not only find the pack you need, but find one you love.
